About Umugano Cottage

Umugano is the Kinyarwanda word for bamboo — the plant that grows thick throughout our garden and gives its name to this small family retreat. We built ten private cottages set among the bamboo because we wanted a place in Kayonza that felt like Kayonza — warm, unhurried, quietly proud of the place it comes from.

Where we are and why here

Kayonza sits at the edge of Rwanda's savannah country, halfway between Kigali and the Tanzanian border. It's the practical entrance to Akagera National Park and Lake Muhazi, but it's also a town in its own right — coffee shops, a Wednesday market, families getting on with the work of a Rwandan hillside. We wanted travellers to see all of that, not just the park.

What we mean by "boutique cottage"

We're not a hotel. We're not a lodge. We're ten stand-alone cottages built from local stone, Rwandan bamboo, and hardwood — with private balconies, en-suite bathrooms, and enough garden between each one that you can sit outside without seeing your neighbour. Boutique means we know every guest by name, we cook to order, and we answer every enquiry by hand.

Rwandan hospitality — the actual meaning

Murakaza neza — welcome — is the standard Rwandan greeting for guests. In Eastern Province it comes with a specific tradition: the Agaseke, the peace basket, gifted to visitors as a symbol of unity and welcome. We won't hand you a basket at check-in, but the philosophy runs through everything we do.

What matters to us

• Local first. Our staff is from Kayonza District. Our breakfast produce comes from the Wednesday market. Our furniture is made by carpenters in Rwamagana.
• Quiet luxury. Linen sheets, hand-thrown pottery on the breakfast tray, working stoves in the deluxe cottages — none of the plastic-branded polish of a chain hotel.
• Real conversations. If you want restaurant recommendations, a guide contact, or a lift to the Akagera gate, ask. We know the people.
• The environment. Bamboo is a rapidly-renewable building material. Our garden was designed to add native plants back to a plot that had been maize-farmed for two decades.
