What is Eastern Province like?
Eastern Province is the largest of Rwanda's five provinces, covering roughly 10,000 km² between the central plateau and the Tanzanian border. Where the rest of Rwanda is famously hilly, the Eastern Province is comparatively flat — a landscape of tall grasses, acacia woodland, and long, shallow lakes. It's the wildlife heartland: Akagera National Park protects 1,122 km² of savannah and wetland home to lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos, giraffes, and over 500 bird species.
Culturally, Eastern Province is the home of Ankole long-horned cattle, the Imigongo geometric art tradition, and Agaseke basket weaving. It's also the province with Rwanda's warmest, driest climate — perfect for slow-paced travel.

Most travellers pick one base and day-trip from it. Kayonza is the practical centre because it puts you within an hour of everything worth seeing:

- Rusumo Falls & the Tanzania border — 90 minutes east.

Best time to visit Eastern Province
The Long Dry Season (June–September) is the classic international-visitor period — dry, cool mornings, perfect visibility. The Short Dry Season (December–February) is warmer but equally good for wildlife and fewer crowds. Avoid mid-April to mid-May if you can — long rains can make park roads muddy.

How do I get to Eastern Province from Kigali?
The Kigali–Kayonza–Rusumo highway is sealed, fast, and busy. Private transfer to Kayonza is 1h 30m. Public bus is 2h. Self-drive is straightforward.
Is one night enough for Eastern Province?
You can see a lot in a weekend, but three nights lets you do Akagera properly, Lake Muhazi at leisure, and one cultural day trip without rushing.
Do I need a 4×4?
Not for the highway or to reach Umugano. Inside Akagera, a 4×4 is preferred especially in rainy seasons — a saloon car works for the main routes in dry conditions.
