Things to do in Eastern Province Rwanda

Rwanda's Eastern Province — Iburasirazuba — is the country's savannah heart. Most travellers come for Akagera National Park, then discover Lake Muhazi, the royal palace at Nyanza, and the geometric Imigongo art that has become a national symbol. This is a working guide to spending a weekend, a week, or longer in the region.

The essential Eastern Province experiences

1. Akagera National Park — Rwanda's Big Five park

The undisputed centrepiece. 1,122 km² of savannah, hills, and lakes home to elephants, lions, giraffes, rhinos, buffalos, and 500+ bird species. A full-day game drive plus a boat safari on Lake Ihema is the classic day. Read our complete Akagera guide.

2. Lake Muhazi — the quietest of Rwanda's lakes

A slim, 40 km freshwater lake between Kayonza and Rwamagana Districts. Swim, take a boat, watch birds, or cycle a stretch of its shore. See our day trip guide.

3. Imigongo Art Centre — geometric art tradition

Imigongo is Eastern Province's most distinctive craft: bold black, white, red, and ochre geometric panels made from a cow-dung base. The Kakira Cooperative near Nyakarambi (Kirehe District, ~1h 30m from Kayonza) is the working centre. Panels available for purchase. Learn about Imigongo history and where to see it.

4. Nyanza / Rukari Royal Palace

Actually just across the border into Southern Province, but easily reachable as a day trip (2h drive from Kayonza). This is Rwanda's traditional royal capital, with the reconstructed beehive palace of King Musinga and the Ankole cattle of the royal herd.

5. Rusumo Falls & the Tanzania border

90 minutes east of Kayonza — a modest but historically significant waterfall where the Kagera River drops toward Lake Victoria. The border crossing here is straightforward for overlanders continuing to Tanzania.

6. Agaseke basket weaving cooperatives

Suggested itineraries

Weekend from Kigali (2 nights)

• Friday evening: drive from Kigali to Umugano Cottage (1h 30m). Dinner at a local Kayonza restaurant.
• Saturday: full-day game drive in Akagera. Return for sunset at the cottage.
• Sunday morning: drive to Lake Muhazi for a swim and a boat trip. Back to Kigali by evening.

Long weekend (3 nights)

Add a cultural day — Imigongo Art Centre in the morning, Rusumo Falls in the afternoon. Return via Kayonza for a final Sunday morning at leisure.

Full week Eastern Province

Two full days in Akagera (morning + boat safari day one, half-day and rhino tracking day two), a Lake Muhazi day, a cultural day, and two easy days at Umugano for the pace.

When to visit Eastern Province

Long Dry Season (June–September) is peak. Short Dry Season (December–February) is our favourite — warm days, few crowds. Long rains (March–May) can make Akagera roads tricky; short rains (October–November) are usually manageable and low-crowd.

Where to base yourself

Kayonza town is the practical centre — 20 minutes from Akagera, 25 from Lake Muhazi, 30 from Rwamagana. Umugano Cottage is our boutique cottage property in the middle of it, purpose-built as a slow, quiet base for exploring the region.
