For most travellers visiting Rwanda's Eastern Province, staying in the town of Kayonza gives you the same wildlife, the same Rwandan hospitality, and the same golden-hour views over the savannah, at a fraction of the nightly rate. Our cottages are a short, familiar drive from the park's main gate and put you inside town by evening — close to restaurants, coffee, and a supermarket if you need one.
What a stay at Umugano Cottage looks like
Every cottage is built from local stone, hardwood, and Rwandan bamboo — the material this valley is named for. Rooms are warm and unfussy: linen sheets, working stoves in the deluxe cottages, private balconies opening onto the garden. Breakfast is prepared with produce from Kayonza's Wednesday market. There is Wi-Fi throughout, and enough quiet that most guests forget to use it.

Location — the practical bit
We sit in central Kayonza District, roughly ninety kilometres east of Kigali on the Kigali–Rusumo road. The Akagera main gate is a twenty-minute drive north. Lake Muhazi is twenty-five minutes south. Rusumo and the Tanzanian border are ninety minutes east. Whether you're on a Rwanda-only itinerary or heading overland to Tanzania, Kayonza is the natural pause.

How far is Umugano Cottage from Akagera National Park?
The main gate at Kiyonza is twenty minutes' drive from our cottages — a sealed road all the way. Most guests do a full-day game drive and are back in a hot shower before sunset.
How do I get to Kayonza from Kigali?
By road, it's about ninety kilometres east on the Kigali–Rusumo highway. Private transfer takes 1h 30m in normal traffic. Public bus (Volcano Express or similar) drops you at Kayonza town centre; we can collect you from there.
Is Umugano Cottage suitable for families?
Yes — our Family Cottage sleeps up to six with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a full kitchen. The bamboo garden is safe for children to roam.
Do you accept payment in RWF and USD?
Both. Nightly rates are quoted in Rwandan Francs (RWF) and the equivalent USD is shown alongside on our booking page.
Can you arrange a game drive in Akagera?
