Where to stay near Lake Muhazi
Lake Muhazi is one of the loveliest and least-touristed lakes in Rwanda — a slim, snaking body of water that stretches nearly 40 km through Eastern Province. There isn't a large hotel on its shore, and that's part of the appeal. Umugano Cottage is 25 minutes from the water in Kayonza town — the practical base for a lakeside day.
About Lake Muhazi
Lake Muhazi is a long freshwater lake in the highlands of Eastern Province, stretching roughly east-west between Kayonza and Rwamagana Districts. It's shallow enough to be warm year-round, clean enough to swim in without a second thought, and rimmed with reed beds that host over 100 bird species. Unlike Rwanda's more famous lakes (Kivu, Burera, Ruhondo), Muhazi is quiet — you'll often have a stretch of shoreline to yourself.
What to do at Lake Muhazi
- Swim: the water is warm and bilharzia-free according to local health advisories, but always confirm current conditions before swimming.
- Boat trips: a couple of small operators run motorised or paddled boat trips from the Rwesero and Kayonza-side landing points. Half-day trips from RWF 25,000.
- Birdwatching: herons, kingfishers, cormorants, and (with luck) a shoebill in the reed beds. Early morning is best.
- Sunset with a drink: a handful of lakeshore bars and small restaurants — informal, local, and very affordable.
- Cycling the lake road: the road running east from Kayonza toward Rwinkwavu skirts the lake for stretches. Bring a hire bike from Kigali.
Why base yourself in Kayonza (rather than lakeside)
There are a few small guesthouses directly on Lake Muhazi's shore, but they're basic and rarely booked out — which reflects their offering. Staying 25 minutes away in Kayonza gives you the comforts of a boutique cottage and better road access to both the lake and Akagera National Park (only 20 minutes further north from us).
A common two-day pattern from our guests: day one, drive out to the lake for swimming and lunch, return for dinner and an early night. Day two, up early for a half-day game drive in Akagera. Both in reach without changing hotels.

How do I get from Kigali to Lake Muhazi?
By private transfer: about 1 hour 15 minutes on the Kigali–Kayonza road, then a 20-minute turnoff south to the lake. Combined with a night at Umugano, it's an easy weekend from Kigali.
Is it safe to swim in Lake Muhazi?
Locals swim regularly and health authorities have historically cleared the lake, but always confirm current advisories with local officials before swimming. Avoid areas with heavy reed cover.
Are there boat trips available?
Yes — small operators at Rwesero and near Kayonza-side landings offer motorised and paddled boats. Book on the day or ask us to arrange in advance.
