Lake Muhazi day trip — swim, boat, and unhurried lunch

Lake Muhazi is one of Rwanda's least-touristed lakes — 40 km of warm freshwater winding through Eastern Province between Kayonza and Rwamagana Districts. It's perfect for a slow day: swim, take a short boat, watch birds in the reed beds, eat grilled tilapia at a shoreline shack. Here's how to structure it.

Where to access the lake

Two practical entry points from Kayonza:

Suggested day plan

9:00 AM: leave Kayonza (unhurried breakfast first). 25-minute drive.

10:00 AM: arrive at Rwesero. Ask around for a boat — a couple of small operators run motorised or paddled boats. RWF 20,000–30,000 for a 60–90 minute trip.

10:30 AM: on the water. Herons and kingfishers in the reed beds; occasional cormorants and darters. In the right season, shoebills have been sighted in the far reeds (rare, no guarantees).

12:00 PM: swim. The water is warm (~24°C) and shallow — locals swim regularly. Bring a rash guard for sun protection; the equatorial sun on water is intense.

1:00 PM: lunch. Small lakeside kitchens serve grilled tilapia (freshly caught, RWF 6,000–10,000 per fish with rice and grilled plantain). This is the meal of the day.

3:00 PM: walk a stretch of the shoreline or nap. If you're cycling, the road east from Rwesero toward Rwinkwavu skirts the water for several kilometres.

5:00 PM: head back. Sunset over the lake looking west is unforgettable if you time your return right.

What to bring

Is it safe to swim?

Locals swim regularly, and Muhazi has historically been cleared of bilharzia by health authorities. Always confirm current advisories with local officials before swimming, and avoid heavy reed cover. Never swim alone at dusk — hippos have been recorded in the lake, though very rarely on the Kayonza side.

Base yourself for the lake and the park

Umugano is 25 minutes from Lake Muhazi and 20 minutes from Akagera — two experiences, one calm base.
