A weekend in Eastern Province from Kigali

Two days is enough to see the best of Rwanda's Eastern Province — a full-day Akagera safari, a Lake Muhazi afternoon, and enough time at a Kayonza cottage to feel like you've actually travelled somewhere. Here's the tried-and-tested route.

Family cottage at Umugano — weekend basecamp from Kigali

Friday afternoon — head east

3 PM: leave Kigali. Drive time to Kayonza is 1h 30m in normal traffic; you'll arrive with an hour before sunset. Take the RN3 highway east through Kabuga and Rwamagana.

5 PM: arrive at your Kayonza accommodation (Umugano Cottage or similar). Get settled. If it's a nice evening, sundowners on the terrace.

7:30 PM: dinner in Kayonza town. A handful of local restaurants serve Rwandan and grilled dishes. Ask your host for a current recommendation — restaurants change.

Saturday — Akagera day

5:30 AM: coffee and pastries at reception. Yes, early.

6:00 AM: depart for Akagera. 20 minutes to the main gate.

6:30 AM–12:30 PM: morning game drive. The first two hours after sunrise are when lions are most active. Cover the northern and central loops.

12:30 PM: lunch inside the park (Ruzizi has a decent day-visitor menu) or back at Umugano's terrace.

3:00 PM: boat safari on Lake Ihema — hippos, crocodiles, an extraordinary density of water birds. 1 hour, USD 40 per person.

5:30 PM: back to the cottage. Long hot shower, quiet dinner, early to bed.

Sunday — Lake Muhazi and back to Kigali

7:00 AM: unhurried breakfast on the terrace.

9:00 AM: drive south to Lake Muhazi (25 minutes). Swim, take a short boat trip, walk the lakeshore.

12:30 PM: lunch lakeside. Grilled tilapia is the local specialty.

2:30 PM: begin the drive back to Kigali. You'll be home by 4:30 PM.

Variations for different interests

Culture focus: swap the Lake Muhazi morning for a visit to the Imigongo Art Centre near Nyakarambi (90 min from Kayonza, back to Kigali by evening).

Slow weekend: add a third night. Sunday becomes a quiet cottage day; Monday morning is the Lake Muhazi trip.

Family with children: shorter game drive (4 hours), longer Lake Muhazi swim time, no early wake-up on Sunday.
