Kigali to Akagera — the drive, the timing, the route

Kigali International Airport to the Akagera main gate is roughly 110 km and takes about 2 hours by private transfer, or 1h 30m from central Kigali. The road is fully sealed. Here's what the drive actually looks like, and how to break it up if you'd rather not do the return in one day.

The route

Head east from Kigali on the RN3 (Kigali–Rusumo highway). Notable waypoints:

• Kabuga: 15 minutes out of central Kigali. First rural landscape.
• Rwamagana: 1 hour. Eastern Province's business hub — good coffee, ATMs.
• Kayonza town: 1h 25m from central Kigali. This is where most self-drivers stay overnight.
• Akagera main gate (Kiyonza): another 20 minutes north of Kayonza.

Options for getting there

Private transfer

USD 80–120 one-way in a saloon car. Airport shuttles and Kigali tour operators arrange it. The smoothest option — you can nap, they know the route. Round trip typically USD 150–200.

Self-drive

Rental from Kigali airport or city centre. A saloon car reaches the gate; for inside the park you'll want 4×4, especially in rainy seasons. International driving permit is accepted. Fuel stations are frequent along the highway; last reliable one is in Kayonza town.

Public bus

Volcano Express, Ritco, and others run Kigali → Kayonza roughly every hour from Nyabugogo bus station in Kigali. Cost: RWF 2,500–3,500. Duration: ~2h. From Kayonza, arrange a taxi to the park gate (RWF 15,000–20,000) or ask your accommodation to organise it.

Should I stay overnight in Kayonza?

If you're doing a day-trip safari from Kigali, expect 12 hours door-to-door with a 6:30 AM departure. Most travellers who've done it once agree: staying one night in Kayonza (a 5-minute drive from the park gate versus 90 from Kigali) is materially better. Early morning game drives are when the animals are most active — you don't want to be 90 minutes late for that.
