What to pack for an Akagera safari
Rwanda's Eastern Province is warm during the day, cool in the morning, and can rain hard in transitional months. Here's a short, practical packing list — the things you'll actually use on an Akagera trip, and a few things guidebooks over-suggest.
The essentials
- Neutral-coloured clothing: khaki, olive, brown. Avoid bright white (dust) and dark blue (attracts tsetse flies in some spots).
- Long-sleeve shirt and trousers: for early morning drives and evening — mosquitoes are most active at dusk.
- A light fleece or sweater: mornings can drop to 12–15°C on game drives, especially June–August.
- Wide-brim hat: the equatorial sun at 1,500 m elevation is stronger than you think.
- Sunscreen SPF 30+: reapply every 3 hours. Rwanda's altitude means faster sunburn.
- Sunglasses: polarised is worth it for lake reflections.
- Insect repellent: 30% DEET or picaridin. Especially for evenings and near the wetlands.
- Comfortable walking shoes: nothing technical — closed-toe trainers work fine.
- Small daypack: for water, camera, jacket during game drives.
Photography kit
- Camera with a zoom lens — 200mm minimum, 400mm ideal for shy animals like the lions.
- Spare battery. Cold mornings drain batteries faster than expected.
- Memory cards (32 GB+). You'll take more than you think.
- Binoculars (8× or 10× magnification). Even one pair per group is transformative.
- Lens cleaning cloth — Akagera is dusty in dry season.
Health and safety
- Malaria prophylaxis: talk to your doctor at least 2 weeks before travel. Rwanda is a malaria zone.
- Yellow fever vaccination: required for entry from certain countries. Check the current advisory.
- Basic first aid: plasters, paracetamol, rehydration salts, antihistamine.
- Water bottle: refillable, 1L. Tap water is generally not recommended; bottled is widely available.
Season-specific additions
Rainy season (March–May, October–November): lightweight rain jacket, quick-dry clothing, waterproof cover for daypack.
Peak dry season (June–September): extra fleece for mornings — temperatures drop lower than you'd expect.
Skip these things you'll see suggested elsewhere
- Full "safari outfit" (multi-pocketed vests, high boots) — you're in a vehicle, not on foot.
- Camping gear — game drives are day-based; you sleep at a lodge or hotel.
- Wildlife identification books — download the eBird app; it works offline.
- Cash converters — Kayonza and Kigali have ATMs and mobile money is ubiquitous.
Book a cottage close to the park
Umugano is 20 min from the Akagera gate — start your game drive with less time in transit.
