The best time to visit Akagera National Park

Akagera is open all year. The season you visit will affect the road conditions, the wildlife density around water, the crowds, and the price of lodging. Here's a month-by-month, honest summary from just outside the park gate.

Rwanda's four seasons — the short version

Month by month

January — short dry, warm, quiet

Excellent for game drives, low crowds after the Christmas rush, warm 27°C days. Great value on lodging. Highly recommended.

February — end of short dry, hot

Similar to January. Late-February can start showing pre-rain haze. Still a great time — but pack sun protection.

March — long rains begin

The wettest weeks of the year land here. Park roads can flood; 4×4 essential inside Akagera. Lower prices, birding is superb, but plan around afternoon rain.

April — heavy rain, low season

The least practical time to visit if you have limited days. Some tour operators offer 20–30% discounts. Landscape is stunning — deep green, dramatic light.

May — rains tapering

Second half of May starts to dry out. Landscape at its greenest. Wildlife back to normal patterns as pools shrink and animals congregate around them.

June — long dry begins, peak season starts

First proper month of the peak season. Cool mornings (down to 12°C), warm afternoons. Book lodging weeks ahead — international visitors arrive in force.

July – August — peak of peak

Cool, dry, dusty. The classic African safari conditions. Every operator is running at capacity. Prices are highest. If you want the traditional Rwanda safari experience, this is it.

September — still peak, slightly quieter

Excellent conditions, fewer travellers than July/August. Our recommendation for first-time visitors who want the classic experience without the peak-peak crowds.

October – November — short rains

Intermittent afternoon rain, mornings usually clear. Game drives are still very productive, park roads mostly manageable. Prices dip slightly — good value shoulder season.

December — short dry begins

Warm, dry, festive. Domestic and regional tourism picks up. International crowds start rising in the last two weeks. Great time if you can travel between the 3rd–20th.

So what's the ONE best time?

For most first-time visitors: June to September, understanding you'll pay peak prices and share the park with more visitors. For value + quality: January or September — the sweet spot of good weather, active wildlife, and manageable crowds.
