Looking for a hotel in Kayonza?
Kayonza has a handful of highway hotels and a few family guesthouses. If you're after something quieter, warmer, and set in a garden rather than on the main road — you're really looking for a cottage. Umugano Cottage is the boutique middle-ground: hotel-grade service, cottage privacy, priced for real travellers.
Hotel vs cottage — what actually differs
A traditional Kayonza hotel gives you a room on a corridor, breakfast in a shared dining hall, and (usually) a car park next to the highway. Rooms are functional; you're paying for the room, not the setting. It works for a business trip or a one-night stopover.
A cottage — like ours — gives you a stand-alone building with its own entrance, private outdoor space, and no shared walls. The setting is the product. For couples, families, and travellers who actually want to unwind between Akagera game drives, the difference is significant.
What Umugano Cottage offers as a hotel alternative
- Hotel-grade service: daily housekeeping, laundry on request, 24-hour reception.
- Boutique setting: ten cottages in a bamboo garden, not thirty rooms on a corridor.
- Breakfast included: Rwandan coffee, fresh bread, seasonal fruit, eggs cooked to order.
- Wi-Fi throughout: reliable enough for remote work; quiet enough that most guests forget to use it.
- Secure parking: off-highway, gated overnight.
- Family-friendly: our Family Cottage sleeps six with a full kitchen for self-catering.
Location and drive times
We're in central Kayonza, minutes from the town's supermarkets, ATMs, and restaurants — but set back from the highway. Drive times: Akagera National Park main gate 20 minutes, Lake Muhazi 25 minutes, Kigali airport 1 hour 45 minutes, Rusumo border 90 minutes.

Is Umugano Cottage a hotel or a guesthouse?
Technically it's a boutique cottage property — but with hotel-grade amenities (daily housekeeping, breakfast, 24-hour reception, secure parking, Wi-Fi). We serve travellers looking for either category.
Do you accept walk-ins?
We prefer bookings in advance so we can prepare your cottage, but walk-ins are welcome when we have availability. Call ahead if possible: +250 788 729 598.
How do payment and check-in work?
Reserve by email with your dates. On arrival we handle payment in RWF (cash or mobile money) or USD (cash). Check-in from 2 PM, check-out by 11 AM — flexible if we have no incoming guest that day.
Is there a restaurant on-site?
Breakfast is served daily on the terrace. For lunch and dinner we can arrange meals with local partners in Kayonza town, or recommend restaurants — most are a 5-minute drive.
