Things to do in Eastern Province Rwanda beyond the safari

Akagera National Park is Eastern Province's headline act, but it's not the whole show. The region is home to Rwanda's warmest lakes, its most distinctive art tradition, historic royal sites, and some of the country's least-visited corners. Here's what to do beyond a game drive.

1. Swim and boat at Lake Muhazi

A 40 km slim freshwater lake threading through Kayonza and Rwamagana Districts. Warm, clean, rarely crowded. Half-day boat trips run from Rwesero and the Kayonza side. Read our full day trip guide.

2. Visit the Imigongo Art Centre

Imigongo is a traditional Rwandan geometric art form — bold black, white, red, and ochre panels made from a cow-dung base and natural pigments. The Kakira Cooperative near Nyakarambi (Kirehe District, ~90 minutes from Kayonza) is the working centre. Watch artisans build panels, buy work directly from them. 3. Cross to Rusumo Falls

The Kagera River drops modestly at Rusumo on Rwanda's Tanzanian border — but the site is historically significant (the 1994 events unfolded partly across this bridge) and offers a window into the trans-border trade of Eastern Africa. 90 minutes east of Kayonza.

4. Visit the King's Palace at Nyanza

Technically just over the border into Southern Province, but easily day-trippable (2h from Kayonza). The reconstructed traditional beehive palace of King Musinga (early 20th century) plus the Rukari royal cattle herd with their giant curved horns. Rwanda's most important cultural heritage site.

5. Learn Agaseke basket weaving

The Agaseke — the peace basket — is Rwanda's most emblematic craft. Small cooperatives around Rwamagana and Kayonza welcome respectful visitors interested in the weaving process. Read about the Agaseke tradition.

6. Cycle the eastern flatlands

Rwanda's east is the flattest, most cyclable part of the country. The Congo-Nile Trail heads primarily west, but experienced cyclists ride the RN3 corridor from Kigali through Rwamagana to the Tanzanian border. Bring your own bike or hire one in Kigali.

7. Eat local in Kayonza and Rwamagana

8. Stay somewhere that isn't a hotel
